How to choose a pharmacy technician program

1

Check your state board first

Some states require an accredited program or a set number of training hours before you can register as a technician. Confirm what your state board of pharmacy requires, then pick a program that meets it.

2

Decide live vs. self-paced

Live classes (Stepful) keep you on schedule and give you an instructor to ask. Self-paced programs (U.S. Career Institute, Penn Foster) cost less and fit around a job but depend on your discipline.

3

Weigh the externship

Hands-on hours make the job search easier and are required in some states. If you have no pharmacy experience, favor a program that arranges a placement for you.

4

Add up the full cost

Tuition is only part of it. The PTCB exam is $129, and some programs include it while others don’t. Factor in the exam, any books, and your state registration fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on your state. Some states let you sit for the PTCB exam with no formal program, others require an approved training program or on-the-job hours. Even where it’s optional, most employers prefer candidates who have completed training.

Most online programs take 4 to 9 months. Live, cohort-based programs run on a fixed 4-month schedule, while self-paced programs let you move faster or slower.

The PTCB exam (CPhT credential) is accepted everywhere and preferred by most employers. The NHA ExCPT is also widely accepted. All four programs above prepare you for the PTCB exam, and you can practice for it free on this site.

Yes, as long as the program is PTCB-recognized and, ideally, the school is accredited. Online training can’t be ASHP/ACPE accredited on its own, so a hybrid program with an externship is the route if your state requires accreditation.
